195) Trader vs Investor

195) Trader vs Investor

Short Term Trader vs Long Term Investor.

What is the difference between investing and trading?

Investing is the act of owning something (stocks, unit trust funds, property) that an investors thinks will have more value in the future. Investors will hold the investment to earn profit when the value increases and will take a more longer term approach. The timing is not so important.

Trading is the actual transaction that occurs when you buy or sell investments. Traders buy and sell the investments to take advantage of short term market swings. The buying and selling timing is very important.

Analogy Between a Trader and Investor

If you are given 100 good fruit seeds, which option will you take?
A) You sell them at a higher price. With the money, you buy more seeds and sells at a higher price.
B) You plant the seeds and grow the trees. The trees bear fruits and more seeds. You sell the fruits. With the money you buy more land to plant more trees.

If you choose A, then you are a Trader.
If you choose B, then you are an Investor.

Are you a Trader or an Investor?

Trader looks at short term.
Investor looks at long term.

Trader trades the market.
Investor invests in the business.

Trader buys low, sells high for profits.
Investor buys the business for profits.

Trader buys and sells frequently. Makes smaller amount but more transactions.
Investor buys and holds. Makes bigger amount but fewer transactions.

Trader takes higher risk.
Investor takes lower risk.

Trader uses timing.
Investor uses time.

Trader needs more skills.
Investor needs less skills.

Trader looks at profit and loss.
Investor looks at investment objectives.

Trader looks at price.
Investor looks at value.

Trader looks at market volatility.
Investor looks at risk levels.

Trader plays more active approach.
Investor plays more passive approach.

Trader uses leverage to multiply the profits.
Investor uses time to multiply the profits.

Trader uses Technical Price tools to understand the market.
Investor uses Business Fundamentals to understand the business.

Trader monitors the prices constantly.
Investor monitors the business occasionally.

Now you can better decide if you are:
a Trader or an Investor.

193) Why You Cannot Buy Certain Things Online

193) Why You Cannot Buy Certain Things Online

It is very easy to buy products online.
However, services are more complicated.
It is even more complicated to buy consultation online.

What's the difference?
Products vs Consultation.

Many products and services had already gone online.
a) Tickets for airline, movies, parks, etc.
b) Bookings for hotels, restaurants.
c) General Insurance for travel, car, house fire
d) Money transfer within banks
e) Bills and Tolls payment
f) Shopping for items, clothes, food, everything.
g) Even durians can be ordered online

Many people had their jobs taken by internet and computers.

Have you ever go online for medical consultation?
Ever try entering your health situation into a computer and expect an answer?
You can buy medicines online provided you know exactly what medicines you need.
But not many wants to go online for medical consultation because you need to find out more information from the consultant. You want to have an immediate feedback of all your questions from the medical consultant who are doctors or medical specialist.

How about buy car online?
Not many dare to buy online yet, right.
You want to feel the car, do a test drive, see the actual styling, feel the engine performance, fabric texture, have a feel of interior, etc. But, I think the biggest fear is fraud. You want to know exactly where the car sales company is located. You want to know how and where to get after sales service.

How about buying a property online?
No, right.
You need to ask more details about a property. The exact location, building size, materials, design, terms & conditions, loan approval, etc.

Have you engaged an image consultant via online?
Do you feel comfortable sending your picture online and get the consultant tell you how to dress up?

Buying online is mostly possible because you know exactly what you want. You do not need to think too much about the purchase. Another thing is the value is low. The items are of low value that you won't regret much if you made the wrong purchase. If you got it wrong, you can always get another one easily. Or maybe it is just for a one time use. You can still tolerate it even if the quality is not up to your expectation.

You really would not just make online purchase if it affects you greatly, like:
a) health
b) reputation
c) involves a large amount of money
d) effects are for a long term

So, would you buy a Unit Trust investment online?
It will be better if you have a Unit Trust Consultant to guide you. The investment process does not stop after you made the money transfer. In fact, it is just the beginning of your investment journey.
If you invest into an Equity fund, the stock market is the biggest portion of your investment money.  The volatility of the stock market affects your investment values. There are also many equity funds to choose from.

There are many more varieties under the equity funds types:
a) local vs foreign
b) large vs small market capitalization
c) general vs specific theme or sector
d) full equity vs balanced vs mixed asset vs tactical allocation
e) conventional vs shariah compliant

Besides equity funds, there are also bond and money market funds to choose for your investment. Every fund has its own fund objective to suit your different investment objectives. The many funds with the different percentages allocated will make up your investment portfolio in the Unit Trust Investment.

After buying a fund, do you know when to sell or switch to another fund?
Do you know about Asset Allocation and Portfolio Rebalancing?
After the fund had made some good returns, do you sell or keep holding?

There are many more concepts and strategies to understand in a Unit Trust investment.

Having to learn all these differences and details can be a "big thing" to most people.
An easier alternative is get a Unit Trust Consultant to help you.

So, just give your friendly Unit Trust Consultant a call and arrange for an appointment.
You never know what else you can learn from them.

But, your first action is to make the call for appointment.

You can go online to find a Unit Trust Consultant, but not the consultation services.

192) Should You Get A Consultant For Your Investment

192) Should You Get A Consultant For Your Investment?

You do not need a consultant if you already know exactly what you want and know how to do the investment.

But... if you don't know much and still trying to understand about investment, then it is better to get a consultant to help you.

Below are few areas that a Financial Consultant can help you.

Understand your needs

A consultant will never give you any recommendation without understanding your needs first. Share with the consultant of your goals and financial needs. What you want to achieve? What are your future plans and requirements?  How much is required?

Find out your concerns

Share your concerns of the goals. Will it be risky to invest? Can you afford the investment? What are the obstacles? Is it safe? With proper strategies, your investment can reduce the risks. There are strategies like Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA), Asset Allocation (AA) and rebalancing.

Planning for goals

Once you know your needs and concerns, you can plan on how to achieve your goals. Use the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timeline) criteria to set your goals. Discuss with your consultant on what should be done.

Someone to guide

If you are on your own, you may only have limited knowledge. You are not sure on what to do. It will always be better to have someone guide you on how to achieve your goals. Sometimes you need someone to push and motivate you to continue and persevere with your journey to achieve your goals.

Share knowledge

Even if you some knowledge, your knowledge and points of view may be limited to certain perspective points only. You will always be better informed if you start to discuss with others. This is especially useful to discuss with a financial consultant about your financial goals. The old saying says, "Two heads are better than one."

Share Experiences

Having knowledge is never enough. You will be better prepared if other people can share their experiences as well. A consultant who had been in the financial areas, will be able to share their own personal experiences as well as experiences of their other clients.

Process your application

Once you have decided on where to place your investments, the consultant will be able to assist you to process your money transfer from your bank to the investment type. The consultant will assist you to complete the required documents and even submit them for you.

Monitor progress

Another advantage is that the consultant will monitor your investment progress. The consultant can inform you on the ups and downs of your investment values. The investment value will fluctuate according to market conditions. You can use certain strategies like asset allocation rebalancing to preserve profits and buy more equity at a cheaper price.

Regular review and update

Once your investment plan is in progress, you need to do regular review and update your plans and strategies. Your investment are affected by the changes to the market that your investment are in. However, do not do too frequent reviews over a short time. Changes to the investment may incur administration charges. Too much changes to your plan may cost you huge amount in administration fees. Do balance your review frequency and changes to be made. Sometimes, the best strategy is to do nothing.

Next step of action

As your consultant is only helping you to manage your investments, do let them know on what you wish to do next. Do you need to add more money? Should you do asset rebalancing? Is it time to diversify into more markets? Discuss and get a few options on the next action to take. Weigh each option and choose the best one to take, with the current information you have. Nobody knows what will happen in the future, especially the stock market.

At the end, you should be responsible for your own investments and financial goals. You have to make the final decision.

There are many financial consultants that are willing to share their knowledge in the areas discussed above. Best of all, many of them can even share the knowledge for FREE.

If it is free, why not have a discussion with the consultants?
Give your Consultant a call and you may be surprised on how much they can share with you.

191) Why you should do DDI

191) Why you should do DDI?

DDI is the acronym for Direct Debit Instructions. Also known as Auto debit. It is a standing instruction for your bank to transfer money from your savings account into another account.

In the Unit Trust industry, it usually means transfer from your savings account into your investment account on monthly basis.

What are the benefits?

Dollar Cost Averaging

You can do the Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) principle for your investment. DCA enables you to invest small fixed amount, consistently over a long period and avoid the market timing issue. You have the market timing risk if you invest a large sum in one time investment. If you are lucky, you got invested at a low price. If you are not so lucky, you got invested at a high price.

Save first, spend later.

You have heard of the good advise to save your money first, and then only spend whatever is left. This will ensure you set aside you investment commitment first and only able to spend the balance.

Discipline, no emotions.

With automated bank deduction, you will not be influenced by your emotions. It is very easy to fall into the market timing trap. You will always be tempted to wait for a lower price before entering into the investment. By following the market swings, so too will be your emotions. Always influenced by the market..

Won't forget

As it an instruction to the bank to deduct on monthly basis, you do not have to remember to do the transfer. It is a very high chance that you will forget to do the transfer consistently. You will be able to focus your time and energy to more productive tasks.

Consistent amount.

As the DCA principle, the investment amount is consistent. By being consistent amount, the weightage is the same for all investment time. It works very well for the DCA principle.

Convenient 1 time set up.

As it is automated, you only need to setup the DDI once. The bank will do the monthly deductions until your set timeline to stop.

No big amount affect spending.

As the amount is small, but consistent, you will not feel the effect to your budget. You will feel that the amount balance is just like the take home pay. It is just like the regular deductions for Provident fund, income tax, fees, etc. After a few months, you won't even feel the reduction in your take home pay.

Peace of mind. Emergency fund.

When you have set up a regular investment plan, you are also automatically set up an emergency fund. This DDI investment should be considered as the last resort and only used during a real emergency. You have a peace of mind that there is some investment money that is kept in another account.

Wealth accumulation.

Your small buy consistent DDI deductions also mean you have a plan to accumulate wealth for your future financial goals. The goals can be retirement funds, children education, down payment for a new house, a special holiday trip with your loved ones, etc. As you continue the DDI investment, you surely will have more money in the future.

Targeted amount.

If you have a special goal to achieve, you will be able to calculate the full amount for that goal. For example, you want to retire with $1,000,000 in your retirement fund. Depending on the years to invest, you can calculate on the DDI amount. You can set the DDI a certain amount and get your target amount by within certain years.

Not So Convenient.

Using the DDI to invest, your money is transferred out from your Savings account into the investment account. It is not as convenient to withdraw money from the investment, as compared to a ATM card. Basically it is to protect your money from being spent. You will have more time to think about the spending, instead of falling into the impulsive buying mode.

Do consult your financial consultant for more info and details on the different types of investment available.

190) Must I Send My Child To Tertiary Education?

190) Must I Send My Child To Tertiary Education?

If you have a child in upper secondary, you will have this question or will be asking this very soon.

Let's look at the current education system to answer the question.

- It is easy to pass the exams. Be it SPM, STPM, UEC, O-levels, A-Levels, etc. It may be easy to pass, but the number of students who passed had increased steadily over the years. We now have almost 100% passing rates in most schools.
- There is hardly any dropout at lower levels than Form 5.
- More students are qualified to go to the University and Colleges.
- There are more colleges, universities and higher education institutes. It means there are more seats for students for each year and also more intakes.
- There are also more courses available. So, getting into the college is easier.
- Getting Masters or PhD is also very common in many more areas.

If you look at the information above, basically anyone who can and wants to study, can go to a college.

If young graduates are finding hard to find decent jobs now, then what about those who do not have a college degree? They will be in worse position to find a job.

If your child do not have a college degree, he or she will be at a disadvantage. Employers are now looking at higher qualifications than basic degree.

A college degree is no longer a luxury.
It is a basic requirement.

At the moment, a Master's or PhD is an added advantage. But, how long will this be?

So, do you need to prepare for your child education fees?
The answer is no longer a question of YES or NO.

The updated Question should be,

"How much to prepare for the child education fees?"

Some parents will say that they may not need to prepare. The child is very young and college education years is so far into the future. As most people know, it is easier to start savings for the longer years. The earlier you start, the less the amount you need to save regularly.

In investment and savings money, time is your greatest friend.

Some of the parents will even say that they may be savings too much if start too early. Well, if you start early, you can also stop early. If you continue for a longer period, you may have more than enough. That is very good.

Having too much money is never a problem.
The problem is always with not enough money.

So, look for financial consultants who can assist you to plan for your children's education fees needs.

189) Business Owner vs Investor

189) Business Owner vs Investor

What are the Difference Between a Business Owner and Investor?
Let us focus our discussion on businesses only.

Basically, both people trying to make more money from doing businesses. For business owners, they work hard and spend a lot of time into providing products and services to their clients.

For investors into businesses, they provide the money for the business to start and operate. The money is used to provide the means to pay for things and services to run the business. It consists of buildings, electricity, materials, machinery, computers, staff salary, advertisements, etc.

In short,
Business owners work for the money.
Investors let their money work for them.

What about Employees? Employees work for other people's business.

What about Self-employed? They work for their own business. Very similar to Business owners, except that Self-employed do not employ others to do the business..

Now, the next question is, who can be investors of businesses?

The simple answer is EVERYONE.
As long as you have money, you can be an investor.

How can you buy into big businesses?
One way is to buy the shares of the existing businesses.

The next important question is which shares to buy?
How to manage the investment?
Who can help me to handle my investment?

A very simple and convenient way is to invest into a Unit Trust fund.

You only need a small amount to invest into a Unit Trust fund. You can increase your investment as you have more money. There are no compulsory commitment and very flexible in your investments.

Ask your Unit Trust Consultant for more details.

Is the FBM-KLCI at 1663 on 6 Jul 2018 was the recent bottom or just a rest before going lower?

For those of you trying to time the market entry point, the FBM-KLCI broke back above the 1700 points today (12 Jul 2018). Is this a good sign or just a trick?

From the graph and table above you can see that FBM-KLCI had a sharp decline. It started the drop just 3 weeks before the Malaysia General Election 14 on 9 May 2018.

The last recent highest point was 1895 on 19 Apr 2018 and went down till 1663 on 6 Jul 2018. That was a drop of 12.2% in just 78 days.

So, we shall see what is the future direction from today onwards...
